Summary

Detlef Schrempf is certainly a hometown hero for myself and my 90’s Seattle basketball brethren...but he’s also a living example of a self-described “awkward” kid who, after stumbling his way into basketball as a teenager, discovered something he loved...and pursued it. Schrempf went on to play at pinnacle of his sport where he was a 2-time Olympian and a 3-time NBA All Star with the Seattle SuperSonics. That said, we learn in this interview that Detlef won’t be defined *just* by his career as a professional athlete... but also by his role as a father, a husband, and a role model in his community.

Of course I wanted Detlef on to talk about what it takes to be an elite athlete as the show is always aiming to get insights from the worlds top performers, but what really emerged from this episode is his sagedom on all things personal growth, community and how to think about choosing priorities in life.

In today's episode:

  • Whether you’re playing sports or building a business, your team needs to have the right balance of stars and support players.
  • It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional athlete considering buying a $200k ride or a creator considering the latest and greatest gear, being very clear on where the lines are between your financial needs, wants and wishes and choosing to prioritize saving for your needs over spending on wants and wishes will help you be financially successful in the long run.
  • We all go through different seasons of our life where our priorities shift and we grow as individuals and teammates. Don’t think that you can or you should have it all figured out right now. Plan for the future if you have the luxury to, but stay flexible enough to realize that you’re going to keep learning and changing along the way.

Enjoy!

day of the week where I get to introduce this week's show to you, another doozy, and it's coming from a little bit of a different

0:22.1

angle this time. I've been doing some micro shows lately, been working in guests from a bunch

0:27.5

of different disciplines, and this week's guest is an NBA All-Star. That's right, professional

0:34.4

athlete, two-time Olympium, three-time NBA All-Star, Detliff Shremf, played for the Dallas Mavericks, the Indiana Pacers, and, of course, my very own Seattle Supersonics, where he went to the NBA playoff, NBA championship, rather that is, and what an absolute legend.

1:01.0

You know, I try and bring a bunch of different voices into this show for creators, entrepreneurs, the world-class performers, people who are best in class.

1:05.0

And that's why I wanted to have DeLift on the show today.

1:08.0

I've been friends with DeLift for, I'm trying to figure out long,

maybe not 10 years, but maybe this could call it five years.

1:15.3

Someone who carries himself with an amazing level of integrity

1:19.5

and has played at the very, very highest level of the NBA.

1:23.7

We cover a ton of ground that is super relative

1:27.1

to peak performance in any industry.

1:30.3

Things like mental and physical preparation, what it takes to be basically a freak of nature in any industry.

1:39.1

We talk about how, well, I'll say, Detliff talks a lot about being largely misunderstood when you're

1:44.6

so passionate about something and other people don't share their passion or don't share

1:48.9

that passion for you, what it feels like and how, to quote Jeff Bezos, you have to be

1:53.9

willing to be misunderstood for long periods of time to break through in any field.

2:00.1

And Detleff talks about his, you know, he gets very

2:01.9

personal about how as a youngster he was an outsider. Now he's six foot 10, so just he's an outsider,

2:11.3

like physically, he's an amazing human specimen, just a giant person. And he talks about,
