Paul Schaefer was a preacher, a pedophile, and a Nazi. In 1961, he fled his native Germany for Chile, where he found it, Colonia Dignidad, a religious sect and agricultural commune, which sounds abundantly wholesome and pure, and couldn't be

further from the truth of the place. It wasn't enough for Schaefer to rule his colony like a twisted

tyrant, separating the men and the women, removing the children from their parents' care,

working his people's son up to sundown

for no wages. They were his slaves. They were also beaten, starved, tortured with electroshock,

and solitary confinement. But Schaefer wanted even more from them than their freedom and their

labor. Schae freedom and their labor.

Schaefer wanted their souls.

This is the story of how a small group of deeply religious German farmers

were slowly brainwashed and forced to become jailers and torturers and killers. And the late Chilean dictator Aroskud Pinochet had ties

to a secretive Nazi enclave. According to a leaked report, the town called Colonial Dignidad was founded by

Paul Schaefer, a former medic, a foreign medic and Nazi Germany. The ties were unveiled by Chilean Rights Group, Landres 38.

What we know is that there was a narrow collaboration, exchanges of information.

We also know that inside the colony there were enclosures which were part of the network of secret detention centers under the military regime.
