Summary

Today’s episode is from a conversation I had back in 2018 with sports broadcasting legend Dan Patrick, host of the Dan Patrick Show. We talked about his winding career path to ESPN, how he dealt with rejection as a young man, and how he teamed up with Full Sail University to create a modern Sports Broadcasting program to provide the next generation of sportscasters with the right tools to compete in the media industry.

You want people to stay in their cars. That's the goal. Every day when I do this show,

how can I keep you in your car? I want you late for work.

I am here at Full Sail University at the Dan Patrick School of sports casting. I was just saying

0:26.0

that I've dreamed about doing something like this because I feel like working in sports is the

0:30.5

biggest myth. People think sports is a job. They don't understand that there's actually skills and

0:36.6

knowledge and desire to work in sports. Can I get a little bit of your playbook of how you got to

0:43.7

where you are? Because that's the biggest question. Even though it doesn't mean someone else can

CEO of Lee Steinberg, people would run away in the first five minutes when I said,

0:55.6

oh, you know, what's the law school gone into technology? Give us a little bit of your path to

success. Oh, boy. It was uncharted because I had no idea what I was doing. I graduated from the

1:08.5

University of Dayton and I got my degree and then I thought, well, where's my job? And in

1:13.6

this business with a communications degree, there's no job. They're not waiting for you when you

1:18.6

get out the door. And that was a hard lesson because I worked at a rock and roll station on the weekends

1:25.5

and I mowed greens at a jack necklace golf course. So I had a college degree. I'm mowing greens

1:32.4

and I'm working late night at a rock and roll station. And morning guide left, I took that job

1:40.8

and then was known in the in the Dayton area, worked a little bit at weekends at Channel 2 and

1:48.3

Dayton. The full-time job weekend job at Channel 2 came open. I was told by everybody I was getting

1:54.9

the job and then I didn't get it and I was 27. And that's ancient in this business to not have

2:02.1

a TV job. And then I went to CNN, I went to Atlanta to visit an ex-girlfriend and then she said
