We've had tears, we've had rage. You can feel the tension in the air.

And buried in a managerie of fossils, a tooth from an ancestor of the mysterious Hobbit.

Crocodiles, commodo dragons, frogs, birds.

Then it was bingo.

We had the first molar.

Compared with your average researcher training course, the sessions John Chibnell runs get pretty

emotional.

We've had tears, we've had rage, we have had disregard.

Researchers come from all over the US to attend,

but it's not the kind of thing they want to put on their CV afterwards.

They're afraid, they're embarrassed.

You can feel the tension in the air.

The course is called the Professionalism and Integrity Program,

and the participants are all there because they committed research misconduct.

People who have been accused of plagiarism, of fabrication of data,

a fair number of laboratory animal scientists who had difficulties with regard to the care and treatment of their animals.

The program is a way to remedy those problems by reflecting on what led up to them
