Hello and welcome to Backchat. That's the sound of summer in the newsroom, the sound of

0:06.6

pipettes lying abandoned on benchtops, the sound of scientists not answering their phones,

0:11.1

because they're all having a well-earned summer break. In Backchat, we reflect on the science

0:15.6

stories of the month, and it's the summer month of August. Our reporters and editors get to tell

0:20.2

you what they really think of what's being going on this month.

0:23.4

I'm Kerry Smith and I have two very special guests joining me today.

0:27.4

One is Nature's Celeste Beaver.

0:29.5

Hi there. I edit Nature's News section.

0:32.3

And today we also have an external special guest joining us on the line from NPR's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

0:38.9

is their science correspondent Jeff Brumfield.

0:41.3

energy plans? We'll also be talking about the summer doldrums, among news reporters at least,

1:00.0

that well-recognised phenomenon of there being no science news in the summer. What are the

1:04.3

impacts of summer lulls on science coverage? And since we have Jeff Brumfield here, we'll be comparing

1:09.2

science stories and coverage at nature versus NPR.

1:13.4

So first, let's go to Japan, where the Sendai nuclear power plant switched a reactor back on after four years.

1:20.3

It looked like that wasn't on the cards at all after the Fukushima disaster, which is in 2011.

1:25.6

And Jeff, you covered that story at the time, didn't you?

1:27.7

Can you remind us what happened?
