SPOILERS BELOW

Notes * Much of what I read about Florence was pulled from old newspaper articles. * The biography in Notable American Women: Volume 5 does a nice, thorough job with Florence story. * I first stumbled on Florence Chadwick in a photo in a restaurant in Santa Barbara and was struck by, as the photo suggested, she went on a world tour, swimming local channels.

Music * First up is Solitude, from (delightfully named) Janis Crunch. * Then we’ve got Like a Bell to a Southerly Wind, by Chequerboard. * Modular Body #7 by Machinefabriek. * After Catalunya by Ephemetry and Richard J. Birkin. * Finishing up on The Old Favourite by The Gloaming.

Hey folks, this is Nate. As we put this ridiculous here to bed, I've got a lot of thoughts.

0:05.7

And I won't burden you with them all, but I do want to take a second here at the end of 2016 to thank you.

0:11.3

It is an extraordinary thing that I get to do for a living.

0:14.4

And I am neither being self-deprecating or fishing for compliments.

0:20.3

When I say, I kind of can't believe that anyone listens to this thing.

0:24.5

I mean, I think I'm good at the weird thing that I do.

0:28.8

Don't get me wrong, but the idea that folks like you are listening to them,

0:32.4

and at least occasionally connecting with them, is continually surprising and heartening.

0:37.7

And so thank you for listening this year.

0:40.1

I look forward to telling you more stories next year. Come what may.

0:43.6

A special thanks to those who have written in or stopped by to say hello after a live show,

0:48.1

or supported what I do by donating to radiotopia.fm.

0:52.8

This can be a lonely gig. I write these things. I worry over them until they feel

0:58.1

right to me, until they're getting it something, or reaching for something that moves me,

1:03.2

and then I send them out into the world. It can only hope that they move you in some way.

1:09.6

In that spirit, in what I think might be an annual thing, here is the story that I did this year

1:15.6

that has stayed the most with me. I'm not sure if it's the best one,

1:20.2

but there are things in this story which feel right to me. There are things I've been trying to get.

1:24.8

My head around in my own life that are embedded in this story of Florence Chadwick's life.

1:31.3

I could go on and on, but this is already too self-indulgent and you've got your own life to

1:35.2

lead out there. So I will wrap up and just say that I feel like this one embodies

1:40.2

the whole project of the memory palace in a way.
