In this episode, we welcome Nate “The Great” Marquardt to the show. He is an MMA fighter and dedicated disciple of Christ. He has fought in the UFC, Pancrase, and Strikeforce, where he was the welterweight champion. In this interview, we discuss why he wanted to become a professional fighter, what the early days of MMA were really like, his thoughts on weight cutting, the difference between preparing to fight three times in one night versus three times in one year, how he felt after he lost a title fight to Anderson Silva, how he felt after he won a title fight against Tyron Woodley, how becoming a Christian affected his fight career, what most Christians get wrong about discipleship, why he decided to publicly call out Joe Rogan for his ignorance about Christianity and the bible, and much more. This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast. I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it.

0:26.4

All right, guys. Dave got a special guest on the podcast. His name is Nate, the great

0:30.0

Mark Hortz. So he is an MMA fighter. He formerly was a middleweight and welterweight fighter in

0:34.7

the UFC. And he's also the former Strike Force welterweight champion and three time pancreas

0:39.1

middleweight champion. So this is a guy that he kind of bridged the gap between being one of the

0:42.9

original guys that started in the 90s. You know, we had to fight multiple times in one night

0:47.3

through, you know, to the specialization arrow, you know, as you get into the UFC Strike Force,

0:51.2

some of those organizations where you're fighting maybe two or three times a year. And so we talk

0:55.3

about all that in this episode. So we get into the Xs and O's of what early MMA was like compared

0:59.9

to today. Some of his biggest losses, biggest wins. So obviously he won the title against Tyrone

1:04.5

Woodley and Strike Force, lost a title fight against Anderson Silva and the UFC considered by

1:09.2

many to be the greatest middleweight fighter of all time, even though he's popped several times. But

1:12.9

anyway, that's not what we talked about today. So we did talk about a lot of kind of the Xs and

1:16.4

O's and stuff of MMA. And that's all really interesting. But the biggest dominating thing about

1:20.9

Nate's life is the fact that he's a Christian. He's a Christ follower and he became a Christ follower

1:25.1

while he was still fighting. And so you kind of have that inner dissonist that that conundrum to where

1:29.8

it's like, wait, can I punch people in the face and still be a Christian? And I really liked his

1:32.9

answer to that. But in this interview today, again, we do talk about the MMA stuff. But then we talk a

1:36.8

lot about how he didn't just become a Christian, but he took Christianity so seriously that he went

1:40.9

to seminary, you know, he's selling his house and moving to to basically go be a missionary and

1:46.4

instead of a Christian schools. And a lot of very, very interesting things. This is a guy that takes

1:50.4

his faith and takes study of the scripture and being a disciple of Christ very seriously. So there's
