• On Monday, Donald Trump took the witness stand in a civil fraud case in which New York Attorney General Letitia James, a political rival, alleges the former president inflated the value of assets controlled by the Trump Organization in financial statements. If Trump loses the case, he could be fined up to $250 million and be prohibited from doing business in New York moving forward. Notably, in 2018, while campaigning to become Attorney General, James vowed to “sue” Donald Trump—providing evidence to Trump’s argument that this civil suit is entirely political.
• According to Jonah Bromich, a New York Times reporter who was inside the courtroom on Monday, “Alina Habba, another of Trump’s lawyers, is trying to clarify what they are being asked not to discuss as she again says that they will move for a mistrial. She says there is more than the notes passed between the judge and his law clerk at issue. The judge, in a meta moment that he acknowledges, is now consulting with the law clerk in question, Allison Greenfield. • While speaking outside of a New York courthouse on Monday, Donald Trump’s attorney Alina Habba accused Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron of belittling her, yelling at her, and “slamming” his fist on a table—referring to the judge as “unhinged.”
