Welcome to the beat. I'm Melissa Murray in for Ari Melbur, and we are tracking breaking news out of Tennessee.

These are pictures of celebrations in Nashville, Tennessee. Just moments ago, the National Metro Council voted to reappoint Democratic lawmaker Justin Jones.

Jones was one of the two lawmakers expelled last week after protesting for tougher gun laws.

Here's the moment that the council voted to reappoint him.

Justin Jones has been elected as the interim successor for the vacant seat of Tennessee House

District 52 pursuant to the state law and the rules governing the Metropolitan Council.

Jones is expected to retake his seat in the legislature tonight, and the legislature is

gaveling into session this hour, so we could see Justin Jones's dramatic return to the floor.

Separately, later this week, a different local council in the Memphis area may

reinstate Justin Pearson, the other expelled lawmaker. We have a number of experts on all of this,

plus I will later talk to the councilwoman who nominated Jones for reappointment. But joining me

live now from Nashville is NBC's Kathy Park. Kathy, what is the mood on the ground there in Nashville? NBC News. We're live right now on MSNBC. What do you think about the appointment? This is what justice looks like. This is what democracy looks like in Cameron's sex and then the Republicans. They didn't want to see it. But the people in Nashville knew that justice needed to roll down like rivers and righteousness,

like an ever-flooring stream.

That's what we're seeing today with Justin Jones' reappointment.

And it's time for him to get back in the statehouse and get to work.

So I wanted to reset for a moment or there.

That was Justin Pearson.

And he is the second Tennessee lawmaker who was ousted. Justin Jones just was reappointed a few moments ago, and a lot is fluid right now. You see hundreds of people around

here in Nashville, downtown. They rush out of the metro chambers, metro council chambers not too long ago,

and now they're headed to the state Capitol.

And they're actually looking at the clock because they're hoping to present this resolution,
