Hello and welcome to the first ever episode of Legacy.

I'm Afua Hirsch.

And I'm Peter Franco Pan.

The purpose of this show is to take key characters from history

and drill down into their legacy in a way you might not have heard before,

to ask how their

history informs the present.

We're going to talk about people, their lives, the reputations, and how we should re-evaluate

them, or if we need to re-evaluate them at all.

We're not shy of really going there for the big names, but we're living in an age where

a lot of those received wisdoms or ideas that have been handed down more comfortably for generations are rightly, I think, being debated in a new way and a new light.

And I think that's healthy and that's exactly what we're doing.

I think also we're living in a time of great change in the 21st century.

So picking out the key individuals to think about what they did, why they did it, how we should think about that today,

I think it's going to be a real challenge.

We're going to begin with someone who is seen by some as a brutal dictator and warmonger

and to others as a visionary leader.
