Forum Women's Forum is written extensively on a Federal Indian policy Naomi Sheifer

Riley.

She wrote the book, The New Trail of Tears, How Washington Is Destroying the American

Indians.

Absolutely.

Thanks for having me.

So, the Department of Interior released this, released this first and what looks like it's

going to be a series of reports on the Federal Indian boarding school and initiatives,

about 106 pages that really documents these government sponsored schools across reservations

from 1819 to 1869.

I was wondering if you could kind of break down what the Indian boarding school initiative

was and the importance about this report.

Sure.

Well, Indian boarding schools were largely run by churches in this country and they were

a way that both government authorities and religious leaders saw of educating and training

for trades in some cases, American Indians.

You know, they had sort of encountered reservations and sought of the people there as largely

uncivilized and uneducated and disapproved in many ways of cultural practices on the
