Summary

Contradictions over baptism and salvation in creeds, continued (Part 2). In the previous episode, we saw how the Belgic Confession was, in places, clear on its articulation of the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith alone. And yet when it discussed baptism, these ideas were muddled, creating theological confusion. This episode details more of the same, this time in the Heidelberg Catechism.

0:54.1	baptism will look at the Heidelberg Catechism. It's important to keep in mind
0:59.0	that the reason I'm doing this is that I've had lay people read these documents
1:03.6	and emerge very confused. They know the gospel going in and are left wondering
1:09.0	why in the world the creeds say what they do coming out. They read clearly on
1:14.3	the gospel in one part and then they say things about baptism that sound like
1:18.4	they violate the gospel. The poor wording is a very real source of confusion for
1:23.9	people who aren't theological experts and frankly the experts are so married
1:28.8	to the creeds via denominationalism that they're left to defend the confused
1:33.8	wording poorly in many cases. Let's look at the Catechism now. It's structured in
1:40.2	the form of questions. Heidelberg Catechism question 60. How are thou
1:47.9	righteous before God? Answer only by a true faith in Jesus Christ so that, though
1:56.8	my conscience accused me that I have grossly transgressed all the commandments
2:02.0	of God and kept none of them and am still inclined to all evil. Notwithstanding
2:08.3	God without any merit of mine but only of mere grace grants and imputes to me
2:14.8	the perfect satisfaction, righteousness and holiness of Christ. Even so as if I
2:22.6	never had had nor committed any sin, yay as if I had fully accomplished all that
2:29.3	obedience which Christ has accomplished for me in as much as I embrace such
