Summary

In this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, host Dan speaks with Kip Adams from the National Deer Association about the importance of deer management, hunting regulations, and the cultural influences that shape hunting seasons. They discuss the role of antlerless deer in population control, the impact of diseases like EHD on deer populations, and the future of deer hunting regulations. Kip shares insights from his extensive experience in wildlife biology and emphasizes the need for hunters to understand the balance between deer populations and habitat capacity. Takeaways Kip Adams has been with the National Deer Association for 23 years. Hunting seasons were established to protect deer populations from overhunting. Antlerless deer play a crucial role in managing deer populations. The number of deer hunters significantly impacts deer harvest numbers. Many states are currently encouraging hunters to harvest more antlerless deer. Cultural factors heavily influence the timing of hunting seasons. State agencies manage deer populations at the zone level, not property level. Disease outbreaks can lead to rapid adjustments in hunting regulations. Public land availability affects deer management strategies. Hunters should engage with their state agencies to understand regulations. Good to see you. Yeah, you too, man. It's been a while. How long have you been with the NDA now? Man, in August of this year, I had my 23 year anniversary. So it doesn't seem possible. I don't feel anywhere near old enough to have been any place for 23 years.

1:38.4

It's been a good ride, I'll say that. And I got a lot more white in my hair and in my beard than when I started for sure.

1:46.1

That's a fact. I'll tell you this. I got a little patch here where every day I go look in the mirror and I'm like,

1:51.8

I used to find a gray hair and I used to pick it out. But now I'm to the point where it's not worth it anymore because I'd have like big patches in my beard of where I'd removed all the white

hair. So I'm, I'm heading down that path. Well, I used to have red hair as well. So my beard was red and my hair was all red. I, I, I wear my hair short anyway. And now of my way for my daughter cuts it. I say, you know, I kind of missed the, uh, the gray stage. I went straight from red to white. There was no, like, in between. It's just all white. I'll tell you what. I'm pretty like skin. So it looks like I'm bald at times. So I got a lot of hair. It was just not a lot of color to it. And I like to wear a short. So I guess that that makes it even a little worse. Yeah. So I'll tell you this. It's hot right now here in the Midwest.
