Summary

Most hunters overlook the secret to consistently finding and ambushing mature bucks — and it’s not about the latest tech or fancy gear. Pierce Nelles shares a behind-the-scenes look at how he locates prime deer bedding and travel corridors using simple, proven methods, and why understanding deer behavior beats all the stats and gadgets.

In this episode, you'll discover how subtle observations during the scouting process can unlock the highest quality hunting spots — from reading deer sign to analyzing pressure and movement patterns. Pierce breaks down the importance of slow, deliberate entry, how to interpret their bed-to-feed cycle, and why pressure and cover dictate where bucks really live, not just where they are seen. We also dive into the myth of “perfect” food plots and why a rugged, natural habitat often holds the most consistent bucks, especially on public land.

If you’re tired of guessing where the big boys are hiding or wasting your time on spots that look good but don’t produce, this episode will reframe how you approach scouting and stand placement. Timing, observation, and patience are the hidden keys — not just trail camera numbers or high-dollar gear. Pierce’s real-world stories and tactical insights will inspire you to hunt smarter, less pressured, and more effectively in the fields and woods.

Perfect for serious hunters who want to optimize their strategy without overcomplicating it, this episode pushes you to think differently about deer movement, habitat, and your approach. If you believe success isn’t about luck but preparation, this one’s for you.Pierce Nelles is a highly experienced public land hunter and conservationist, known for his nuanced understanding of deer behavior and his ability to turn scouting insights into success. He’s spent countless seasons mastering the art of hunting mature bucks on public land and private ground alike.Whether you’re hunting Iowa, Wisconsin, or anywhere in between, prepare to redefine your approach and chase bigger, smarter bucks with confidence. Hit play now and step into the mind of a seasoned hunter who knows how to get it done the right way.

And then you got other guys who are just like, dude, if they start walking away from me in the mornings and they go the opposite direction, I'm just not good enough to go.

1:57.7

And A, I don't have the patience to wait them out. And B, I'm not good enough to go flank them or sit there and wait until the, the Tom's get, you know, know that they're not going to breed any of these hens. And then they kind of come off the hens and then they go look for something out. Like, I go looking for other birds. And if I don't find other birds, then I go eat some breakfast somewhere. And then that's the day, really. Yeah, dude, absolutely. I saw that clip you posted on how to hunt turkey about the guy mentioned in that comment of like, I don't like deer hunting for turkeys. And that's, that is a phrase that lives rent free in my head all spring long. because I'm like, you know what? It's been 15 minutes. These birds ain't common. Screw it. And then I get up and I bump them as they're skirting down the field edge towards me or something. Oh, I don't know. But that was, I will say patience is what killed my, my turkey in Iowa on Friday. I slowed the whole thing down because I'd bumped so many dang birds in Wisconsin leading up to that point that I was like, you know what, dude, you need to chill out and just listen to the birds, develop a thoughtful game plan.
