For several weeks, Henry Lawrence retired millionaire and then receiving letters threatening his life.

Investigation by the police had failed to reveal the identity of the person sending them.

On May 6th, I received a frantic telephone call from a man who refused to give his name,

telling me that Lawrence had been found murdered and asking me to come to the ancestral home

located in the town of Templar.

Yes, I'm Barton Drake. I just learned that Mr. Lawrence's sudden death. Drake, sir?

Yes, I'm private. Oh, yes, sir. You are the criminologist, a friend of Inspector Danton,
