Summary

Life is full of twists and turns that we know nothing about in advance, but God does. And some of those twists and turns are intended as “divine detours” where God brings people along our path who need to hear about Jesus. The Lord desires to use Believers to share their testimony so that others can hear about a life-changing relationship with Jesus. In the book of Acts we see this played out in Paul’s life when he was in prison in Caesarea. While imprisoned there, God brought along five influential leaders to hear Paul testify of Jesus. It’s a good reminder to us that we should be looking for those “divine detours”—times when God brings people along our path to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May we be faithful to share with them our story for God’s glory!

All right, Acts chapter 24 is where we're going to be today. We're actually going to be going through a little bit of 24, a little bit of 25, and all of 26. So, Lord willing, we're going to get through these chapters. I hope you have your Bibles, if not pull it up on your phone, because I'm going to be reading a considerable amount of scripture today.

And just by way of a background to get the context, I need to back up a little bit. It's been a

0:24.7

couple of weeks since we've been here in the Book of Acts. So just for those of you who were

0:28.9

already here to be reminded, those of you who are new to our Bible study to catch you up to

0:33.2

speed, the Apostle Paul has been arrested in Jerusalem for preaching the gospel, the good news

0:41.2

of Jesus Christ. When Paul gets here to Jerusalem, he basically draws the ire of the Jews who do

0:50.8

not believe that Jesus is the way to salvation, the Jews who believe that the law

0:55.0

and obedience to the law is the way to be saved, they take issue with Paul and his message

1:00.7

that salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ, not obedience to the law. Everybody needs

1:05.8

to understand that the law never saved anybody. The commandments of God and the law of God never saved anybody.

1:12.6

The commandments and law of God were intended to expose our unrighteousness and to lead us to the

1:19.5

righteous one. His name is Jesus. And so the justice of God is revealed in the law of God.

1:27.3

And the justice of God means that we all get what we deserve,

1:31.9

which is punishment and eternal separation from God. That's the law of God. And the law of God

1:37.8

expresses the justice of God. But then there is the grace of God. And the grace of God is

1:42.9

expressed through Jesus Christ. And the grace of God is expressed through Jesus Christ.

1:45.6

And the grace of God teaches us that we can have our sins forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ,

1:51.2

who died on the cross. He took the punishment for us. The justice of God was meted out on the

1:56.7

cross in that Jesus took on our sin and our punishment, though he himself committed no sin,

2:03.8

he became sin for us that in him we might become the righteousness of God. And so we are

2:09.5

given the choice even still today. You want the justice of God or you want Jesus. You can

2:14.3

have justice or you can have Jesus. I will choose Jesus every time. I don't want the justice of God.
