Summary

As the battle over the future of education intensifies, Ravi takes a step back to ask a bold question: What if we could redesign K-12 education from the ground up? He breaks down what’s working, what policymakers and educators have gotten wrong, and the bold, forward-thinking innovations that can best serve students in a rapidly changing world. In this special episode, Ravi explores everything from flexible school models and student-driven learning to how to prioritize mastery over grade levels and teacher autonomy over bureaucracy. He asks whether schools should mirror our increasingly individualistic society or act as a counterbalance to its isolation and what role educators should play in fostering student identity. Finally, Ravi unpacks the biggest barriers to innovation, why creativity and critical thinking should be at the core of modern learning, and what it would take to build a truly world-class education system. Welcome to The Lost Debate, a show for political eclectics. I'm Robbie Gupta, and this is a special

0:05.9

episode. Longtime listeners will know I'm a former school principal and superintendent of a network

0:11.8

of charter schools in Tennessee and Mississippi. I care a lot about education, as I know many of you do.

0:18.3

And I've long felt like the national conversation,

0:22.3

whether it's in our politics or in our media,

0:24.8

is often lacking in ambition, nuance, and detail

0:29.7

on questions of K-12 education in particular.

0:34.2

And so what I want to do today is just take a step back

0:37.2

and talk about, like, what would

0:39.9

an ideal system or system of schools and supports the equivalent of what a K-12 system in my world,

0:48.2

what would that look like if I were designing a system? What kind of policy changes should we make?

0:53.9

And what kind of innovations should we see

0:57.5

both within schools and in communities? And so what I'm going to try to do here is be fairly

1:03.0

comprehensive, but I'm not going to hit everything. I'm not going to hit higher education,

1:06.7

for example. I'm going to barely touch pre-K and child care. I'll talk a little bit about it,

1:11.7

but not a ton. And I'll try to pick a few spots where I'll drill down. And my goal here is just to give

1:17.4

you a forward-looking vision of what a great education system should be. And I also want to work

1:23.6

within the constraints that exist. I don't want to just put a pie in the sky vision out there

1:28.6

that has no chance of ever being implemented. So I'm going to try to work within the bounds of

1:33.7

reality, but be ambitious within our reality. And what's fascinating about school and education

1:39.0

generally is it's one of the last remaining collective experiences left in American society.

1:45.0

It sure, you know, two students have the exact same experience, but we generally follow a similar
