Summary

In this energetic and wide-ranging episode of Being Jewish with Jonah Platt, Jonah sits down with comedy and television icon Howie Mandel (America’s Got Talent, Deal or No Deal, Gremlins, St. Elsewhere) for a conversation that moves effortlessly between laughter and reflection. From his early days as a stand-up comic to becoming one of the most recognizable faces in television, Howie reflects on a career that has spanned more than four decades, and the values that have grounded him throughout it.

With trademark honesty and humor, Howie opens up about his Jewish upbringing, family life, and how Jewish values have shaped his worldview both onstage and off. The conversation also takes a more serious turn as Howie speaks candidly about the resurgence of antisemitism, the aftermath of October 7th, and what it has felt like to navigate Jewish identity in an increasingly hostile global climate. Thoughtful, funny, and unexpectedly moving, this episode offers a rare glimpse into how one of comedy’s most familiar figures navigates faith, fear, and responsibility to show up when it matters most.

Topics Discussed Include:

  • Howie’s Jewish upbringing in Toronto
  • How comedy became a creative outlet and coping mechanism for anxiety and OCD
  • The influence of Howie’s father on his Jewish values and identity
  • Howie’s early years doing stand-up
  • Howie’s opinion on tzedakah
  • Why Israel struggles with public perception
  • Jewish identity and visibility in a time of rising antisemitism
  • Howie speaks out about injustice and intolerance
  • Pro-Palestinian vs. Anti-Israel movements: understanding the difference
  • Howie on NBC, Hollywood, and Jewish representation
  • Jews being targets for their appearance outside of NY and LA
  • Howie’s goal, “I just wanna do the right thing.”

Shalom, Kavarim, Banot, and welcome to another very special episode of the world's number one Jewish podcast.

0:08.1

I have to ask for a small favor.

0:10.4

As an independent show, we don't have a massive marketing machine behind us.

0:14.6

Our growth is purely organic, fueled by dedicated viewers and listeners like you.

0:19.5

So if you would be so kind, please take 30 seconds,

0:24.0

head over to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, find this show, and leave me a five-star rating and a short

0:30.0

written review. I love seeing all of your thoughtful and generous feedback. Some of it has even

0:35.0

made it onto the show and may again. And as of this recording,

0:38.5

we are just eight ratings away from hitting 500 on Apple. Crossing that threshold would be a huge

0:44.3

milestone for us. It's a small mitzvah on your part, but it really is the fuel that allows us to

0:50.0

keep these amazing conversations going. So thank you in advance. Unless you don't leave

0:55.6

a rating, in which case you're a butt head. New Year, new monologue. If you listen to

1:02.1

this show every week, first of all, thank you. But you'll also notice I haven't written

1:06.0

a new one of these in about a month. The obvious reason is that there are a lot of work and

1:09.7

I needed a break. But when I

1:11.7

sat down to write this one, I asked myself, okay, why have I really been avoiding this? And I realize

1:16.6

it's because I've been digesting a lot of important ideas from a lot of smart people over the

1:21.8

past few months. And I think with the natural refresh of a new year, my mind needed time to

1:26.5

absorb everything, percolate for a while,

1:29.3

and finally arrive at a streamlined and coherent message that I want to communicate to you all now.

1:35.1

It's been an enormous amount to distill, which is why my brains needed some extra time to compute it all,

1:40.3

but this may be the most important monologue I've ever written.
