Summary

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQc5DTICvTM Probably my favorite camera ever made is the Holga. Its a cheap plastic camera that you can get for almost no money. It has no features and very little control. But if you learn how to use a Holga it opens up a lot of creative possibilities on a camera that you can't get any other way. The Holga is probably one of my favorite cameras ever produced and there was some sad news in the last couple weeks

0:06.0

Some of you may have heard that the company that makes these in China has announced that they are no longer going to produce Holga's. In fact, it went a step further to say

0:13.6

that they've already shut down the manufacturing facility,

0:15.7

sold off all the machining equipment,

0:17.4

and whatever is left in stock on shelves in the stores now

0:20.7

are the last of the Holgas.

0:22.4

And this news made me a little bit

0:23.7

sad because there are I mean the Holgas gotten a little bit of a bad rap with people

0:28.3

over the years but it really is one of my favorite cameras. It is nothing but limitations.

0:33.8

But once you get a handle on those limitations,

0:36.1

not only is it an excellent way for a beginner

0:38.2

to learn how to take pictures and how photography works,

0:41.5

but it also creates a set of challenges that you need to get

0:44.8

around creatively to make it do what you want it to do.

0:48.0

And so that's what we're going to talk about today with the Holga.

0:50.4

If you've never seen one of these up close, the Holga is basically a cheap plastic camera.

0:54.6

It takes 120 medium format film and features pretty much no frills.

0:59.2

You advance the film manually, it has one shutter speed, the early hoga's only had one

1:03.8

aperture setting and you have a single element meniscus lens that's made out of

1:08.6

plastic and so because of the inconsistencies in the production, different cameras look different ways.

1:14.8

You can focus it, there's a couple little icons here on the lens barrel that you can use for

1:18.9

that, but that's about it.
