Summary

Loved this conversation with Joshua Coombes around how I think about Giving in a 2019 world, especially in the non-profit world.

I wrote Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook to explain this side of marketing, because most people that are offering to give, are really trying to take and most are not even aware of the vulnerability of their behavior.

On February 20th in London, Joshua Coombs and Gary sat down for an hour plus business Q&A. Enjoy.

0:20.0

I first want to thank everybody for being here. I'm sure there's...

0:22.0

You could have been anywhere in the world tonight, but you decided to be here.

0:25.0

I appreciate that. I'd love to do as much Q&A as possible, I think, for anybody in the audience, whatever the questions are and whatever genres.

0:33.0

If you want to talk about the New York Jets American football, that is something I can speak to or anything else you'd like to speak to about.

0:39.0

But just having a sense of the audience and knowing there's a mix of entrepreneurship and a mix of corporate, in this journey that you're going through, when I'm always fascinated when someone does something,

0:53.0

I think that the most interesting things I see in the world are more based on counter-punching skills than they are on the game plan you had going into the fight.

1:02.0

I think the ability to recognize the collateral from your movement as a person or as an organization or as a business and contextualizing it to the reality of what's happening, not the hypothesis or thesis you came into it, is super duper important.

1:20.0

I would argue a very important thing for every person in this room, whether a professional person need to think about, because that's then practical instead of pontificating or a hypothesis.

1:31.0

For you going through this, you start something, you decide you start a hashtag.

1:36.0

If you met me on day one and said, hey, I'm going to do this hashtag, it would have been like, bro, don't do a hashtag.

1:41.0

Hashtags are not onable. You can put it out there, but right now I can use your hashtag to siphon the people paying attention to that, to sell a razor.

1:49.0

I could. They're not onable, but what I wanted to ask that I thought could bring the most value to this group is, what's been the biggest surprise as you've gone through this journey?

2:00.0

What did you ideology wise have in your head three years ago? That's just fundamentally different today.

2:08.0

Yeah, so that's a really, really good point because for me, I just, I guess that's what I can hands up say I did not have going into this is like that kick back questions once I started, I just went in with an idea and went out and started executing it.

2:22.0

And that was that, but the biggest surprise for me for sure has been the, the, the tiniest amount of people have kicked up against this.

2:29.0

And I mean that in a way of like the competitive world of charity and business and all kinds of different things, I felt almost zero competition in what I'm doing.

2:37.0

And although it's like super important too, I thought plenty of times, like, yeah, it's just a hashtag anyone could take do something and I think I do what they want with it, but I kind of want them to do that.

2:45.0

I want them to go ahead and do exactly that. And I suppose there's enough populate in this already that you can see what it's about.

2:50.0

And I feel so lucky the fact that there's already enough of a journey to go if someone tried to come in and it wasn't authentic.

2:56.0

I think it would be right out pretty much immediately. But the biggest surprise honestly has been the amount, the, the small amount of haters I've had is quickly transitioned into I feel like people who, who see this for it is.

3:09.0

And I don't think that's anything to do with me personally. I think it's just that I'm not trying to shout anyone. I'm just saying here's how I'm doing it. Just playing the amplifier and it seems to have worked.
