In our last episode, we discussed Total Recall, a Paul Verhoeven film in which Arnold Schwarzenegger performs Feats of Daring on Mars.

Today we'll be talking about Captain Marvel, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first to focus

squarely on a female superhero. Co-directed by Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck, the team behind

Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind, and other films, Captain Marvel keeps pulling the rug from

beneath its heroine, played by Bree Larson, and known initially as Vairs.

As the film opens, she's part of the Cree race's elite seal team-like squad of commandos, a group

determined to take out any stronghold in the hands of the villainous scrolls. Yet she's troubled

by memories she can't quite place, and by the Cree Supreme Intelligence, he's always taking

the form of a woman she can't quite remember. but who's obviously important to her and who we know

to be important since she's played by Annette Benning. Lady on Earth only intensifies those

questions, and as she learns more about life on this apparently primitive planet, she also

learns much about herself, all while blowing up a lot of military hardware.
