to the Moon.

Not to be outdone, of course, the Soviet Union launched the first space station, Saliot 1, into low Earth orbit

that April.

In November, Mariner 9 had been launched and was successful in its mission to become the first artificial satellite

to orbit Mars, mapping the surface of Mars, gathering atmospheric data, and taking highly detailed images of the surface.

Also this year, China was admitted into the United Nations.
