1:10.0 | When I started this podcast, I knew that cases involving missing in murder black women and women of color were under-reported. |
1:18.0 | But what I didn't realize was how under-reported they actually are. |
1:23.0 | It wasn't until I started doing research for these shows that I realized that this under-reporting, coupled with some very deep-rooted systemic issues, also affects native women and their stories. |
1:37.0 | And so doing Rosetta's story is important because indigenous women are also being murdered and going missing at extremely high rates. |
1:46.0 | But these cases receive even less coverage by the media. |
1:51.0 | The fact is that most of these crimes take place on reservations, and the media doesn't pay much attention to what's going on there. |
2:01.0 | These reservations also have very limited police resources, and they often need support from the local counties or FBI to assist in these investigations. |
2:12.0 | But for 99% of these cases, no one pays very much attention, including the police. |
2:21.0 | In 2018, Rosetta Strong was living in Wapato, Washington. |
2:26.0 | The mother of four was living with her sister Sissy at the time. |
2:30.0 | Now, there isn't much public information about Rosetta's early life, but she and her siblings had grown up in Yakima County in Washington state. |
2:39.0 | And Yakima County is where the Yakima Indian Reservation is located. |
2:44.0 | Rosendo was a citizen of the Confederate tribes, the Umatila Indian Reservation. |
2:52.0 | The Yakima Indian Reservation includes the communities of Wapato and Tapanish. |
2:58.0 | Now, the combined population of these two areas is around 15,000 people. |
