The city of Philadelphia is a city that for many, many years has suffered under the weight of gun violence.

Gun violence has had a significant impact on the city and the predominantly black and brown, predominantly low income communities inside of it.

Last year was a particularly violent year here in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia had 561 murders. 501 of them were gun deaths.

Like I said, gun violence has for a long time been embedded in many communities in Philadelphia.

But one thing that never used to be as common as it is now is the shooting deaths of women and children.

And while young black men between the ages of 18 and 34 make up an overwhelming majority of the gun deaths last year,

there were also a lot of mostly black women murdered in this city too.
