Summary

This week, for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're bringing you the stories of two women whose lives were stolen by their abusive ex-partners. We are supporting two organizations. The Network, which is a Chicago based advocacy group who has provided training and services to people in the same area where Shaquita lived. We also are supporting the Center for Survivor Agency and Justice in their missions to foster change at all levels and empower communities to better meet the needs of survivors everywhere.

0:00.0	Hi, Crime junkies. I'm your host Ashley Flowers and I'm Brett and today I want to talk about a theme that's been pretty consistent on our show since almost day one.
0:11.0	October is domestic violence awareness month, but this year with the COVID-19 pandemic, the conversation is a bit different.
0:20.0	Domestic and intimate partner violence statistics have taken a scary turn as public health measures designed to stop the virus from spreading have left victims isolated.
0:32.0	The National Domestic Violence hotline reported a 15% increase in their contact volume in April 2020 compared to the year before.
0:40.0	With the pandemic piling on and added stress and financial uncertainty all over the globe, some suffer through lockdown with their abusers while others are unable to access vital services like courts and therapy.
0:54.0	Though the stories I have for you today aren't directly linked to COVID-19, I think it's important to keep that statistic in mind.
1:02.0	What was already happening is happening now more than ever. But the cases I have for you today were actually recommended to us by some of our fan club members who reached out and asked us to shed light on two women who never met in life but who share similar experiences and met similar tragic fates.
1:23.0	These are the stories of Shakita Bennett and Tara Costigan.

1:57.6	In the summer of 2013, a young woman in Chicago's South Side named Shakyeda Bennett is looking

2:07.5	She's finally ready to break up with her boyfriend, this man named Dishon Johnson,
2:12.1	and put their volatile relationship behind her once and for all.
2:16.7	Instead of respecting Shakyeda's choice and leaving her alone to move on with her life,
2:21.4	Dishon reacts badly.
2:24.1	One of this behavior seems to be new after Shakyeda ends the relationship.
2:28.5	Her mom and some other family members date allegations of Dishon's behavior as far back
2:32.9	as 2010, like three years before this has been going on.
2:37.2	But after the breakup, Dishon allegedly starts stalking her and making threats.
2:42.5	And before that summer is over, Shakyeda starts to fear for her life.
2:46.8	She knows she can't handle this alone.
