Christopher Wallace—better known as The Notorious B.I.G.—rose from the streets of Brooklyn to become one of the most iconic voices in hip-hop history. But just as his career was reaching its peak, he was gunned down in Los Angeles in a crime that remains officially unsolved to this day. In this episode, we trace Biggie’s journey from his early life and rise to fame, through the East Coast–West Coast rivalry, to the night of his murder and the tangled web of conspiracy theories, police corruption, and false leads that followed. We also explore his mother Voletta’s relentless fight for justice, and the legacy Biggie left behind.

0:00.0 | Before he was the notorious B.I.G. He was just Christopher Wallace, a kid growing up in Brooklyn with a dream and a whole lot of talent. His rise to becoming one of the most influential rappers of all time was fast and filled with fame, but it was also marked by hardship and hard choices. In the end, his life was cut short in a murder that remains unsolved to this day. |
0:21.5 | Join us as we tell the story and remember the mystery that still surrounds the death of Biggie Smalls. |
0:33.7 | Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms and Mysteries podcast, a true crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa. Hi, Melissa. Hi, Mandy. How are you? I'm doing great. I just tripped myself up on the intro. I think I said welcome to the Moms and Mystery podcast. And then I don't know. It took my brain a second to catch up. Just one mystery. |
1:02.9 | But it's a big mystery today. It's one that is still a mystery. Things are going good. I don't know if you ask me, but I'm going to tell you things are going well. |
1:13.8 | Good. Great. Yeah, yeah. Gorgeous outside. We just got through Memorial Day weekend. Summer is officially here for us. And yeah, I'm excited to see what the summer has in store. Way more positive than I actually feel inside. But did you believe it? You said it with all the |
1:20.0 | confidence and optimism. Of a liar. Yeah, me too, though. I'm really excited for the summer. |
1:27.4 | You know, that's always my, that's my season. |
1:29.8 | I want to know what my color season is. If you've seen a lot of that, like, it was going crazy on TikTok and stuff, but I still, I still don't know what mine is. Maybe I never will. Maybe I'm a summer like you. But like, I don't think that's my color season, though. I know what you're talking about, though. |
1:44.9 | The color analysis to find the colors that work best for your skin hair, eye color, combo, all of that stuff. |
1:52.0 | And mine has actually changed because I've changed my hair color. |
1:55.5 | And so one time I did the analysis. |
1:57.9 | And it actually is funny how true it is because I used to wear certain colors that now I don't feel like look the same on me or I just don't like the way they look on me anymore. I think because I changed my hair color. So a lot of stuff doesn't work for my hair color now. But I don't know what my true color is. I feel like you would be something in fall or winter or something, right? Because you can wear like the deeper colors. Like you're somebody that can wear a darker lip and it doesn't look crazy. I look psychotic if I do that. |
2:23.9 | It depends. I could look psychotic. Or sometimes if I do too dark lip, then I might look like I'm going for like an emo goffery. |
2:31.5 | Which could be, I mean, it could work for me, but that's not my personal |
2:34.9 | style. So sometimes I stay away from darker colors for that reason. Oh, if anyone has a |
2:39.6 | legitimate way to do that, I've been wanting to and I can't tell. So I just need someone to |
2:43.6 | personally tell me, unless it hurts my feelings. If somebody wants to tell me, go ahead. All right, Melissa, are you ready to get into this week's story? Let's do it. |
2:52.2 | All right. Christopher Wallace was born on May 21st, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were |
2:59.4 | Jamaican immigrants, but by the time he was two years old, his father had left the family. |
3:05.2 | Christopher was raised by his mom, Valletta Wallace, who was a preschool teacher and a |
3:09.6 | devout Christian who worked hard to give her only child a stable and structured life. The rest of the |
3:15.2 | world would eventually come to know him as big or biggie, but to Valletta, he was always just |
