At around 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016, 22-year-old Nathan Carmen and his mother, Linda Carmen, who had just celebrated her 54th birthday, set sail.

They were on Nathan's 31-foot boat, the chicken pox, and they were going tuna fishing.

They left Ram Point Marina in South Kingston, Rhode Island, and they were headed

toward an area called Block Island.

Linda and Nathan fished together often.

He would later tell reporters that this was their primary thing they liked to do when they

hung out together.

Linda texted a friend to say that they would be home before noon on Sunday.

When they failed to show up the next day, that friend who Linda had texted alerted the Coast Guard.

This set off a massive search and rescue mission.

The Coast Guard searched over 82,000 miles of open water, but they found

no sign of Linda or Nathan or the boat. Five days later, they called off their search. Everyone

believed that Nathan and his mother were dead since there was no way they could have survived

in the cold North Atlantic Ocean for that long.

Then two days later, a crew member of the Orient Lucky, a commercial freighter, saw a red inflatable

life raft around 115 miles off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.

There was a guy on board who was frantically waving his arms,

and that person turned out to be Nathan. When they pulled him out of the water, Nathan said that

his boat had capsized, sank from below his feet, and that everything happened so fast that his

mother disappeared. She never even had time to scream. He claimed that he had been

drifting in the ocean for over a week. I Carmen's location, they started communicating with him.

The U.S. Coast Guard has released recordings of that audio.
