Our case today starts in a village right near Melling, Merseyside, which is in the suburbs of Liverpool. Life moves

very slowly here. It's got an older population. There are some younger people as well, but it's

definitely a place for older people. It's the 5th of September 2004. And on this particular day,

it's a warm, sunny morning. And a man called Pete Boyle is walking down the street and he decides to check in on his neighbour's house. Now, the reason he does this is because his neighbours, Sydney and Jacqueline Blackwell, they live in the house with their son, but oftentimes they leave to go to Spain. They have a villa there, they'll have holidays there,

sometimes for weeks at a time. But he hasn't seen them for a while and he sees the post

building up in the kind of porchway area and decides he's going to go and post it into the actual

house so that for safety because the actual porch area was slightly open.

So he walks up to the porch area, starts to place the letters inside the post box,

but as soon as he opens up the flap of the post box, he realizes that something is definitely wrong

because it's almost as if as he opens that up, it releases

this gas, this smell, a stench that he doesn't recognise, he just knows it's not right.

And then he starts hearing this buzzing. And so he kind of backs away and as he does, he looks

round and realises there are thousands

and thousands of flies. And they're not just coming from the letterbox itself or from the

porchway. As he's backed out, he can see that they're actually all over the house and he even

goes round to the back of the house to peer in to see if he can see anything. And he realizes
