Summary

Beth McNamara is a Los Angeles-based television and documentary producer with over 25 years of experience in content development and production of more than 100 hours of entertainment garnering her two Emmy Nominations. Beth co-produced the 2018 Sundance documentary feature: INVENTING TOMORROW which won multiple awards including a 2019 Peabody. Currently, Beth is the Creator and Executive Producer of the multi-season investigative podcast: MURDER AT RYAN’S RUN which does a 50-year deep dive into the Philadelphia-based group known as MOVE. The indie podcast features exclusive insider sources that expose MOVE to be a destructive and deceptive cult that controlled, abused, and terrorized them. In addition to working on a book about MOVE, Beth is also developing other stories as documentary films, podcast series, television series, and movies. In this revelatory and rare interview with journalist Beth McNamara, you'll hear Beth reveal behind-the-scenes details from her investigation into the cult dynamics of the supposed Black Liberation group MOVE. Throughout the discussion, Rachel and Beth offer their insights into the harm neglectful parents and unofficial guardians needlessly inflict on children in cultic groups. They go on to discuss how MOVE hijacked the narrative about their group and avoided any legal consequences from their child endangerment and criminal intimidation. Before You Go: Rachel breaks down the manipulation inherent in calling the child victims of the horrific MOVE bombing "Revolutionary Martyrs" You can find more info about Beth and her podcast at: https://www.murderatryansrun.com/ All of Rachel's free informational PDF documents are available here: www.rachelbernsteintherapy.com/pdf.html All of Rachel's video lectures are available for purchase here: www.rachelbernsteintherapy.com/webinar.html To help support the show monthly and get bonus episodes, shirts, and tote bags, please visit: www.patreon.com/indoctrination Prefer to support the IndoctriNation show with a one-time donation? Welcome to indoctrination, a weekly conversation series about protecting yourself from systems of control. I'm your host, Rachel Bernstein.

Hi, everyone. As regular listeners might know, I'm always fascinated to see where people are listening to the show throughout the world.

0:29.1

And I'm always curious about why certain locations seem to be very invested in learning about cult dynamics and systems of control.

0:36.9

In some cases, there are obvious historical or sociological reasons why our show might be more popular in certain areas.

0:39.2

The societal ramifications of the Holocaust, for example, likely factor into why we have so many listeners in Germany and in Israel,

0:46.1

while the spread of Nazi occupation throughout Eastern Europe may explain our popularity

0:51.0

in places like Poland and the Czech Republic.

0:54.8

What is fascinating in its own right is when we see huge spikes in listenership in way less

1:04.0

populated communities.

1:05.6

I've mentioned before that we have a strong listenership in Eagle Mountain, Utah, a suburban

1:10.7

community infamous for its

1:12.6

large population of Mormon polygamists. There are many other examples of places where we have a high

1:19.4

listenership that either have a history of cultic influence or are suddenly inundated with followers

1:25.4

of a dangerous group. A particularly fascinating example of

1:30.0

this phenomenon is our listenership in Vanuatu, a small group of islands in Oceania, where we have had

1:38.8

over 2,000 downloads in the past couple of years. This is an extremely remote and isolated location with a

1:47.1

culture that still has remnants of the John from Cargo Cult. For those unfamiliar with the concept of a

1:55.0

cargo cult, which is actually a fairly antiquated term, it is essentially a belief system in which a group of people

2:02.9

in an isolated indigenous society imitate the behaviors, rituals, and symbols associated with

2:10.2

technologically advanced societies, particularly those characterized by transportation and material

2:16.6

wealth, in the apparent hope of attracting

2:19.6

similar benefits. It's a fascinating subject that we hope to cover in a bonus episode soon
