Summary

It’s been barely seven months since we last had Mumford & Sons in the studio but hot on the heels of ‘Rushmere’ and they’re back with ‘Prizefighter,’ a deeply collaborative record featuring Hozier, Gracie Abrams, Chris Stapleton, and Gigi Perez, and produced by The Nationals Aaron Dessner. Turns out spending time in Paris with Pharrell Williams was a key spark for inspiration on this sixth album.

The trip talk about all this, plus Brandi Carlile texting Marcus lyrics she literally dreamt, existential chats with Marcus’ son, their Railroad Revival tour that took place last summer and featured the likes of Lainey Wilson, Maggie Rogers, and Nathaniel Rateliff, plus so much more.

Hi, beautiful human. I'm Zach. That is Anna. We welcome back to the studio three

0:10.6

Yeah.

0:11.0

Yeah.

0:12.0

Oh, hello.

0:13.0

Prize fighter. Are three of you prize fighters?

0:17.1

Yeah, where everyone's at you, you're a prize fighter now as well. Everyone is prize

fire. Can you explain to me genuinely what that means in the context of life? We're swinging on this one, baby. That's what it means. I was wondering is how I'm boxing. We're going for it. We love it. I've never felt this way about a record at this point in the process. We listened to it, well, we've locked a bunch of people in

0:38.4

the room to listen to it last night in Los Angeles. And I've just, I've never like, because we

0:43.7

finished it like a year ago. And I've never at this point in the process heard any of the

0:47.9

songs back that we've recorded and felt like, I wouldn't change a note of that. I'm really happy

0:52.1

with it. You said that you haven't felt this way since your first album.

0:56.0

Yeah, personally I haven't, yeah.

0:57.7

Can you explain what that feeling is? And how do you know?

1:00.7

It felt like the purest recording, writing and recording experience we've had, like the most

1:07.7

innocent since the first record where you have no expectations

1:11.6

you you don't I mean you have a couple years to write the songs and collect them so it is

1:17.3

different but like there was just a purity in the process on price fighter that I haven't felt like I've

1:23.6

had since since the first record and partly because we put a record out and the pressure is off.

1:47.2

Once you get a record out, no one expects anything of you for a while. You're talking about Rushmere. Yeah. Which, by the way, that's when we talk. That wasn't very long ago. I was like, how are you guys going to come up with enough to talk about? If you ask us about, we just saw you. But yeah, I think it was like the pressure's off because you make a record and and for us like having been away for a while we got over the hump of getting back in

the room writing songs making record and this one just felt like for free this one felt like for fun

and there was a and we locked ourselves away at long pond with
