Summary

Some scientists think there may be a countless number of universes, all with their own laws of physics and their own unique map of the stars, separate from the one we know.

It’s an idea that challenges everything about the way we think, and there are even several different theories as to how these multiple universes might be created...

This is the theory of the multiverse.

Hello and welcome to this new episode of Mysteries of Science. My name's Dan and I'm the editor of

0:06.9

Science and Nature, the monthly magazine from the team behind the week junior. And I'm Michael, the junior editor.

0:13.3

In each issue of science and nature, we explored the universe through in-depth features, new stories,

0:18.5

or inspiring images, interviews with top experts and much more. And in each

0:22.7

episode of the podcast, we investigate a weird or unexplainable area of science or the natural world.

0:28.4

Hey, welcome on board, Michael. It's great to have you joining us on the podcast. I hope you've brought

0:34.0

your very best investigating game with you. What case are we looking into today?

0:40.6

Well Dan, you throw me in at the deep end here with a totally mind-bending mystery. Now, have you

0:46.1

ever wondered what would happen to your life if you'd taken some different decisions?

0:49.8

Not sure where this is going. What if you didn't get up one day or chose not to go to school?

0:54.4

What if you turned left at the bottom of the street rather than right?

0:57.4

How would that have changed your life?

0:59.3

Maybe if you were running a bit late and missed the train, you might not have made it to your

1:02.7

interview on time, Dan, and missed the chance to become the editor of science and nature?

1:06.7

And what if there were other universes where all those other possibilities did happen?

1:11.3

What if the cosmos that we live in is just one of many?

1:13.9

A multitude of universes. Not a universe, but a multiverse. In a mind-boggling multiverse of different

1:20.9

possibilities, every alternative reality is possible. There could be a universe where you're a

1:25.3

pop star, one where you're a prime minister,

1:27.8

or maybe Dan, even one where you're a star striker for Liverpool. I love this idea,

1:31.6

so you could just be anything in any universe. Let's go in search of these missing realms.

1:37.9

I quite fancy locating that universe where I'm the overlord of everybody.
