Welcome to the plant path, your window into the world of herbal medicine, with Saja and Whitney Popham, founders of the school of evolutionary herbalism.

0:23.6

Hey, what's up everybody? Saja here and standing in our mugwort patch and it is in full flower.

0:31.6

The bees are loving it. Thought we'd come down and share a little bit about the medicinal properties of this herb. So mugwort, you know, I love this plant.

0:40.3

This is one of the plants, kind of one of those first plants

0:43.3

that I really started getting interested in when I first started becoming an herbalist

0:48.3

back, oh, I don't know, geez, probably, I don't even know how many years,

0:53.3

probably close to 20 years ago, I guess.

0:55.7

1:01.3

those plants, you know, that those first plants you get to know, they always kind of, I have fond

1:46.6

quite bitter, not quite as bitter as many other Artemisias like Wormwood or Sweet Annie,

1:53.0

but it is definitely distinctly bitter. While at the same time, it's pungent and aromatic. So this is

1:59.5

a combination of taste that is really, really useful

2:03.3

and lends to some really interesting properties. David Winston refers to them as fragrant

2:09.4

bitters. Other herbalists might call them just aromatic bitters. I tend to just call them aromatic

2:15.2

bitters. But what's cool about that is that you have

2:17.8

these two actions coming together, whereas pungent aromatic plants typically tend to be warming,
