Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.

I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.

It's one of the most memorable lines from the 2016 presidential campaign, an open invitation

from Donald Trump to the Russian government to help out his campaign by tracking down and

releasing the emails deleted by Hillary Clinton.

When he was asked about this statement in written questions submitted by special counsel

Robert Mueller's prosecutors, President Trump replied that he made that comment, quote,

ingest and sarcastically, unquote.

But Mueller's report tells a different story.

Two top campaign aides, Rick Gates and Michael Flynn, told Mueller's prosecutors that Trump

was intensely interested in finding those Clinton emails, expressed frustration that

they had not been found and made repeated requests that his staff do something about it.

One of them, Flynn, then reached out to a conservative financier, Peter Smith, who

launched an ambitious effort to help Trump out, setting up an entire company funded with

$30,000 working in coordination with the Trump campaign that tried to recruit Russian

hackers for the project.

The story of that secret project is one of the many hidden nuggets buried in Mueller's

report.
