0:06.6	And his name was Hiram Rebels.

0:11.4	He was a minister in the AME Church.

0:18.6	And then in 1870, he was elected
0:21.3	by the Mississippi Legislator to the United States Senate,

0:26.4	The first ever black man sent to either body
0:29.3	of Congress in our country's history was him.
0:33.2	And it is sort of hard to imagine that today, Mississippi,
0:37.1	was the first state to actually send a black man
0:40.0	to the US Congress, but they did.
0:42.0	And they did it all the way back in 1870.
0:45.6	And then, believe it or not, in 1875, they did it again.
0:50.2	The Mississippi Legislator sent Blanche K. Bruce
0:52.9	to the United States Senate.
0:54.2	That is, this second time ever, a black man
0:57.2	was elected to that chamber.
