0:04.2	to be talking about how a 169-year-old photo is at the center of a case against Harvard University.
0:09.1	To Maryland here is suing Harvard for ownership of a couple of photos that she claims show her great great
0:13.3	grandfather Renty and Renty's daughter Delia. And as far as why these photos
0:16.5	would be notable to anyone outside of the family, they are reportedly the oldest
0:19.9	known photos of an enslaved African-American. They a part of a collection of 15 similar photos,
0:24.1	but these photos aren't just documentary.
0:26.0	These photos were also used to prove a 150-year-old racist scientific theory.
0:29.6	And today, this case against Harvard raises many more questions
0:32.0	than just who owns the photo of renting.
0:33.7	From how American universities are profiting from slavery to whether Harvard has a moral responsibility
0:38.0	to give up ownership of that photo.
0:39.7	And so to take you through this case to see what it means for Harvard and these other universities and the larger implications of this case.
0:45.8	We had Dylan Siegel from the team dive into it.
0:48.1	Let's start with the photos of Renty and Delia that Lanier claims are hers.
0:51.4	That image and a few others are part of a series of photos of seven enslaved
0:54.8	Africans in 1850 in which they were stripped to the waist and shot in both profile
0:58.6	and portrait. The photos are actually an old kind of photograph called a degarotype
1:02.3	taken by an equally old kind of photograph called a de-garo type, taken by an equally old kind of camera.
1:04.4	Lanier's lawsuit and several publications claim that the photos were commissioned by a Harvard
1:08.3	professor named Louis Agassi, a Swiss-born zoologist sometimes considered the father of American natural science.
1:13.6	But a spokesman for Harvard's Peabody Museum said that there isn't any evidence that Agassie
