Summary

It's been a sad few weeks since the death of Robin Williams - a man who was synonymous with so many of our childhoods. At the top of the show we take a minute to talk about him and some of the things we've been thinking about since this news hit.

It was difficult to pick just one of his films to revisit for this week's episode, but ultimately we decided to go with Mrs. Doubtfire. It's a role that allows Williams to showcase his comedic and dramatic chops - and it's also probably one of the better examples of a movie that lets Robin Williams be Robin Williams in fairly organic way.

It's also an entry in his filmography that we think even he would be able to poke fun at. Don't get us wrong - all of the performances are pretty stellar, but there are more than a few genuine "wtf?!" moments in this story and Chris remains convinced that if you take Williams out of the equation this is one of the creepiest premises of all-time.

Topics include: a debate about whether the slightly-awkward first act would be better served by having Daniel and Miranda already separated, Chris' theory that some of the early moments with Mrs. Doubtfire are not in their original order, Carlos' argument that Pierce Brosnan is miscast and that the character of Stu is problematic in general, the aspects of divorce the story gets 100% right, the confusing dynamic between Daniel & Miranda after they split, and much much more!

Hey, do you remember Mrs. Doubtfire?

Hello and welcome to Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose-tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

0:32.0

I'm Chris.

0:33.0

I'm Donna.

0:33.9

And I'm Carlos.

And today we're revisiting Mrs. Doubtfire.

0:53.8

Like most of you, we were shocked and saddened by the death of Robin Williams.

0:57.6

And in the wake of that, we didn't want to do anything that felt opportunistic or exploitative.

1:02.2

But we also realized that this was a man who was synonymous with our generation's childhood.

1:06.6

And given the nature of this show, it also felt like we had to do something.

1:10.4

So ultimately, we decided

1:11.6

to keep it simple and just pick one of his movies. And when you're talking about such a versatile

1:16.3

performer, that's a hard thing to nail down. I pushed for Mrs. Doubtfire, even though there are

1:21.3

other Robin Williams movies I like better, but this is the one I had a great deal of affection

1:25.7

for as a kid. And even though it's a very

1:27.7

broad comedy, there are still really dramatic moments and you get to see both sides of him.

1:32.3

It also felt like one that was the most appropriate for the podcast in some ways, because I don't

1:37.7

want to poke holes in dead poet society or try to make jokes about something like that

1:42.5

at this moment in time, whereas something

1:45.8

like Mrs. Doubtfire is a lot more malleable in that regard.

1:48.8

It's something I think even he would be able to laugh at.

1:52.8

But before we get into that, I thought we could take a second and talk about Robin Williams
