The pavement on the road ahead ripples and cracks

as the car slows down, anticipating a bumpy ride.

A white sign with black letters and peeling paint stands on the side of the two lane road, which winds north to your

destination. A not so lonely mountain with a clear view of a distant city and miles of surrounding

wilderness. Welcome to New Hampshire, the sign reads.

That same phrase is written on the sign's lower half in French, Bienvenu, New Hampshire.

After crossing the border, the destination is now about 20 miles from Jaffrey, New Hampshire. In that small, well-kept town, there's a 3,165 foot

mountain named Manatok. Not part of any nearby range. It is a mountain in isolation.

The Abenaki could have named it Manad Nok, which roughly speaking, mountain that stands alone in English, though the exact meaning
