Summary

On this episode, we go beyond the usual explanations of freedom and thrill to explore how riding a motorcycle doesn’t just feel different—it engages our brains in a uniquely powerful way. Cognitive scientist Mark Changizi believes that riding may be the one activity that truly fits how our brains evolved, creating a seamless connection between humans and machines.

Mark Changizi is a cognitive scientist and theorist known for exploring why we think, feel, and see the way we do. His research has led to discoveries about colour vision, visual illusions, emotions, language, and even why fingers get pruney in water. He has published several books, co-founded VINO Optics to develop vein-enhancing glasses, and his work has been featured on TED, Brain Games, and Head Games.

There's been a lot of movies made about it.

Matter of fact, a while ago, a film came out called Why We Ride, really well-done film.

0:17.3

A bunch of writers talked about why they rode.

0:19.9

And they had all different reasons for it.

0:22.0

It was a connection. It was something to do with, you know, someone who passed or there was all

different reasons why motorcycling was special to them. And every time I read something

0:30.8

about this or hear something about this, they talk about how it feels, how it changes them,

0:34.8

how it's freeing and thrilling. but nobody really nails it. They never

quite answer the real question. Why do we ride? Today, this is why we ride. I want to go further

0:48.3

because according to new science, riding a motorcycle doesn't just feel different. It actually

0:53.1

plugs into our brain in a way that's

0:54.9

almost uncanny. Through all of our senses, it's as if the machine was designed to connect with us.

1:02.0

I mean, the motorcycle began as a two-wheeled transportation device, a bicycle. We understand that.

1:08.2

But almost by accident, humans have developed a machine that fits so perfectly with the mind and body that it feels as if it was designed by nature itself.

1:17.5

It's almost like something out of a science fiction movie. You know where you see those stories where a human and machine are combined like maybe arms or legs or whatever, but it creates something stronger and more capable than either one is on its own.

1:29.1

Riding a motorcycle gives us that experience for real. When you're in the zone, riding the motorcycle,

1:35.6

you're not just operating a machine. You become a new kind of being, half human, half machine,

fully alive with extra powers. When you're really in the zone, it's hard to tell

where you end and the bike begins. And according to Mark Changizi, he's a cognitive scientist who's
