Whether thou art a ghost that hath come from the earth, or a phantom of night that

0:06.5

has no hollow, or one that lieth dead in the desert, or a ghost unburied, or a demon, or a

0:13.3

ghoul, whatever thou be until thou art removed, thou shalt find here no water to drink,

0:20.7

thou shalt not stretch forth thy hand to our own into our house enter thou not through our fence breakthrough thou not we are protected though we may be frightened our life you may not steal though we may be scared to death. Welcome to scared to death. Creeps, Peepers, Roberts, and Annabels. I'm Dan. Hello, Lulu Marie. Hello, Lulu Marie. Hello. You want to talk about charity before we jump into the show? I do. I'm obsessed with this charity. Yeah, you have been in a great way.

0:58.7

Yeah, I just think it's one of the coolest charities that I've come across that is just so unique and just really touched my soul. This month's donation was sent to Freedom Reads,

1:04.2

a nonprofit, started by Dwayne Betts. Dwayne himself was sent to prison at age 16 for a carjacking,

1:12.8

and then he found himself in solitary confinement where his paperback books were confiscated as contraband. And after he was released from prison,

1:19.0

he started Freedom Reads. And what Freedom Reeds is, is it's an organization that inspires

1:25.0

and confronts what prison does to the spirit. They bring beautiful

1:29.2

handcrafted bookcases like you guys, they're so beautiful, to these prisons, transforming cell blocks

1:35.6

into freedom libraries. The library is a physical intervention into the landscape of plastic

1:40.8

and steel and loneliness that characterizes incarceration. In an environment where the

1:47.5

freedom to think, to contribute to a community, and even to dream about what is possible,

1:52.7

is too often curtailed, Freedom Reeds reminds those inside that they have not been forgotten.

1:58.4

And so we sent Freedom Reeds $11,000 this month while also

2:01.8

putting $1,230 into the scholarship fund. If you want to learn more or support Freedom Reads,

2:09.1

you can learn about them at FreedomReads.org. I was like just crying, reading this website.

2:15.0

It's so, so cool. We were having conversation about it at home. It's like, obviously there are plenty of people in prison that should be in prison. There are a lot of people who are in prison who shouldn't be in prison. And even the people that should be there, it's like rehabilitation is the point if they're going to get out. Yeah. And books are a great way to open people's minds and open people's

2:34.5

hearts. Yes, yes. Yeah, I could not agree more. Dwayne himself went on to get a law degree from Yale and then

2:40.3

start this nonprofit. And like, listen, I have a family member who is a convicted felon. And I think like,

2:47.8

yeah, you know, I'm so grateful for the person that he became afterwards

2:52.7

and what truly his story is so incredible, like, got clean.
