0:42.0 | But we begin this week with the retail industry. |
0:45.0 | And guys, people who think retail is headed for a bad holiday quarter, got some more ammunition this week. |
0:51.0 | We got quarterly results from both Walmart and Coles that were disappointing. Same store sales, Andy for both of them were down. |
0:59.0 | And even Nordstrom, third quarter profit was down. There are just a lot of retail companies that are hurting. |
1:05.0 | Yeah, the bright spot was actually Macy's. Macy's saw same store sales up around 3% and earnings beat and earnings above growth of 20%. |
1:13.0 | So we are seeing a little bit of this high end is winning. Low end is really struggling. |
1:18.0 | I mean, Coles, Walmart, that side seems to be having a rough go of it as we've seen the economic recovery mostly on the high end. |
1:29.0 | So those companies like Macy's, Nordstrom is actually not so bad that they guided for 2.5% growth through the year. |
1:36.0 | Those are where you're going to see a lot of the e-commerce wins too. So the direct consumer e-commerce wins. |
1:41.0 | That all speaks to a higher type clientele willing to spend in this kind of market. And we're not seeing that the low end. |
1:47.0 | Ron, when you look at the retail industry writ large, what do you see? |
1:51.0 | Yeah. Well, same store sales as a project that I saw. I think I'm Morgan Stanley reporting really only about 1.6% for this season versus maybe 3.5%. |
2:01.0 | That's the holiday quarter. This is the money quarter. |
2:04.0 | Yes, the things are weak. But then you point out, listen, the stock market is going gangbusters. Home prices are strong. |
