0:50.5 | We've been looking this week at the story of a guy named Nehemiah who takes on this daunting task of rebuilding the broken down walls around the city of Jerusalem. |
0:59.2 | After over seven decades of exile and captivity, the Israelite people are allowed to return to their homeland, only to find it in very rough shape. |
1:08.4 | Now, there's still lots of enemy nations out there that would love to enslave them again, |
1:12.2 | and they don't have a strong military presence, and since the walls were down around their city, |
1:16.8 | it left them super vulnerable to anybody who wanted to attack, no ADT security, no ring doorbells, |
1:22.8 | no gated community, nothing to protect them. |
1:25.9 | So Nehemiah gets a word of this, and it breaks us heart. |
1:29.2 | And he weeps, and he prays, and he fast asking God for help. And then he takes a deep breath and |
1:35.7 | makes a very bold ask of the king he works for. He asks the king to grant him a leave of absence |
1:41.5 | so he can go back and lead this rebuilding project. |
1:45.3 | And since Nehemiah was such a positive, joy-filled, capable, humble servant of the king, |
1:50.7 | God had given him favor with the king. |
1:53.3 | And the king could see what a genuine burden Nehemi had for his people, |
1:56.9 | so Artaxerxes the king agrees to let him go. |
