Hello and welcome to True Crime Daily, the podcast covering high profile and under-the-rate

our cases from across the country every week on your host, Anna Garcia. Our cases this

week focus on tragedies involving mothers and babies. Police say that a pregnant mother

in Ohio was shot by her toddler who was playing with a gun. The pregnant woman survived

long enough to call 911. The mother was rushed to the hospital, her unborn baby delivered

by emergency c-section. That baby didn't make it. Soon after, the mother passed away.

Now what happens? There's a two-year-old boy who may be responsible for his mother's

death and that of a sibling. What does justice look like in this case? But first, it's

the most extraordinary criminal case I've ever seen. A hated mother in Australia who was

called a baby killer and the country's worst female serial killer because her four babies

under the age of two died suddenly and mysteriously. After the fourth baby died, prosecutors

said there was no way that four babies in one home could die of crib death. And so this

hated woman was sent to prison for murder. 20 years later, she's been pardoned and freed

because scientists using new technology not available at the time of the trial figured out

that the woman carried a defective gene which her babies inherited a rare genetic mutation

that doctors now say could have caused sids. We're recording this on Wednesday June 28th of 2023.
