Okay, I want to begin with a little scenario. Picture in your mind the following. There's a family

0:07.8

sitting together in their living room. Scriptures open on their laps, and they're reading through

0:14.2

a chapter of the book Mormon. As they're going, dad is dutifully reading some verses out loud.

0:23.6

Mom is looking across the room and noticing a troubled look on her daughter's face, and she

0:32.1

picks up on that expression and she wonders how she could possibly help this daughter, who she knows is struggling with certain things.

0:40.1

One of the sons is curled up in a ball, covered with a blanket, with his scriptures propped up on his knees,

0:49.2

and his eyes are slowly closing. He's clearly not engaged in what's going on. And other family members

0:57.0

are sitting there with their, their eyes are open, their scriptures are in front of them,

1:03.0

dad's reading, and their eyes may actually be covering the page, but they have no idea what's being read. Their mind is

1:13.5

completely somewhere else. Now, that's the scenario. How reasonable is that? Or how much

1:22.1

1:30.0

study, we treat it as if it's something we have to do in order to be a good member of

1:37.6

the church. We need to do our daily personal and family scripture study. So check,

1:42.4

we did it. So we come into this experience, we read our

1:45.9

scriptures, and then we go out of this experience and then go back into real life, right? There's a

1:51.2

problem with that. It's treating, it's treating this experience as if it's not part of real life,

1:58.5

as if it's just a duty that we have to fulfill in order to feel

2:03.1

better about our discipleship or our membership in the church.

2:07.3

The reality is that these scriptures are the words of God.

2:12.7

So if we can reverse this mentality and instead of seeing our scripture study or our church attendance

2:20.9

or our prayers as checklist items, but rather these connecting points with heaven, these opportunities

2:31.9

to come unto Christ and to hear his voice speaking to us, it
