in central Johannesburg in South Africa

has left more than 70 people dead.

The loss of life, though, seems to have been made much worse

because residents couldn't get through a lot gate.

Kenny Boopay saw what happened.

This was a building that had been taken over or hijacked by gangs

and then rented out to hundreds of people,

most of them homeless migrants.
