Summary

After another fatal shooting in Minnesota over the weekend, the Trump administration and Minnesota officials are in dispute over the facts. Border Patrol agents shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti on Saturday during an encounter between observers and federal agents. The latest shooting comes less than a month after an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Good. Playbook’s Jack Blanchard and White House Bureau Chief Dasha Burns discuss the fallout from the incident. Plus, the winter storm that descended around D.C. this weekend has tightened the timeline for Congress to avoid another government shutdown.

Today on the Playbook podcast, it's a snow day in D.C. The government's closed. The schools are

0:35.3

closed and we're all staying home. But all eyes are still

0:38.6

on Minneapolis following Saturday's tragic shooting. We've got the latest reaction from there.

0:43.6

And we'll explain why today all the focus will be on the Minnesota court. Hello, I'm Jack Blanchard.

And I'm Dasha Burns. It is Monday, January 26th.

0:54.5

Dasha, you are back with us. Back from Davos. How you doing?

0:57.8

Back from Davos. Oh, my gosh. I don't know what time zone I'm in or what day it is or anything,

1:03.6

but I am loving our winter wonderland here in D.C. Indeed. Indeed. Let's talk a little

1:10.3

bit about the weather at the top. The federal government's down to sort of teleworking mode again today. We're not expecting any action in Congress either. The latest from the weather service is that the storm is now past D.C. We've had something like six inches of snow and another three inches of sleet on top of that. Obviously, in the wider country, Dher, it's a lot more serious in parts of the country. A lot of people without electricity, states like Tennessee and Mississippi facing very serious challenges. Apparently it's going to stick around all week. It's not going to get any warmer all week. So these sorts of events can get quite political quite quickly, can't they? Yeah. I mean, first of all, in D.C., we do not know how to snow here. Right, I've noticed this. So I imagine we're going to be at a standstill until the snow is gone, and I don't know how long that's going to take, given, yeah, it's not going to, like, warm up anytime soon. And it's also quite a serious situation because of course

2:01.2

Congress does need to pass some funding bills this week, rather essentially there is a funding

2:05.5

deadline at the end of this coming week when the government's going to shut down if these

2:09.7

bills aren't passed. So by hook or by crook, these senators need to get back here and talk about

2:14.6

exactly what they are and aren't going to fund. Yeah, and they also don't know how to snow. Right, exactly. Nobody does. So it's going to dominate the week, of course. If this snow and ice is going to be around all week, then people are going to be talking about it here all week. And if people go without electricity for longer than a day or so, that, of course, it's going to become a much bigger issue as well. The other thing people talking about dash is gas prices, which surged more than 80% in three days

2:38.5

are the benchmark natural gas prices.

2:40.5

Yeah, no, I mean, whether events like this often highlight and sort of escalate the issues

2:45.8

that are already on the table, I mean, whether it's federal versus state government and how

various officials
