Israel hits the Lebanese capital as its troops reportedly fire at UN peacekeepers in the south of the country. We speak to a witness to the strikes in Beirut and a representative of UNWRA, the UN's organisation for Palestinian refugees.

Hello and more Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut. It comes after Israeli forces

0:16.2

also fired on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, wounding too. The Lebanese Health Ministry says the

0:22.4

strikes on Beirut have left 22 people at least dead and more than a hundred injured and an hour ago or so I spoke to the BBC's Anna Foster, she's in Beirut and told me more about what's happening there.

0:35.0

We saw and heard these very powerful strikes not far actually from the area that I'm speaking to you from.

0:41.0

What is notable is that again this is a strike in the central area of

0:45.5

Beirut small Cheer neighborhood very close to downtown very close to the UN but

0:50.1

notably not the southern suburbs area where so many of these Israeli

0:54.4

airstrikes have been so far and that is why we're seeing and hearing already a

0:59.1

very large death toll because this is an area that is still busy. I was there earlier today and

1:03.8

the sound of an Israeli drone was very loud and low in the sky above. People were

1:08.5

extremely nervous because they feared another strike and just a few hours later it has happened but it's a busy

1:15.3

area there was no warning and they're still digging through the rubble looking for

1:19.4

survivors. So what sort of building was it, you know?

1:30.0

Well, the indications are that these strikes were both on residential buildings. And looking at some of the pictures that are coming through on Lebanese TV, we're seeing one

1:34.4

building that looks like it's collapsed and another building where two apartments seem to have

1:39.4

been hit by a missile so that the ones above and below are still intact but two actual

1:45.2

apartments have been completely destroyed windows out walls gone. There is

1:50.6

some indication or certainly some reports in the local media that this might have targeted the brother-in-law of Hassan Nasrallah

1:58.1

The leader of Hezbollah who was killed nearly two weeks ago now no confirmation of of that just yet. If that was the case

2:04.8

then I expect that Israel would have something to say about it fairly soon. So at

2:10.0

the moment that is just local suggestion but certainly they had a target in mind

2:15.8

in this particular area away from where you know most of Hezbollah's top commanders have been being based.
