| 0:00.0 | All right. We're mixing it up today. Not a PowerPoint. We're just going to look right at the scriptures. |
| 0:20.3 | Just cover a couple of things. I think there's no way in class we'll get to chapter 56, but there's some key elements in there that I really want to cover. So let's look starting. As you shouldn't be surprised, I think really the first two verses of 56 are the end of the thought that was in chapter 55. |
| 0:42.2 | And by the way, chapter 56 is where most people say Trudeau or third Isaiah starts. |
| 0:48.4 | But that doesn't work very well based on the idea that we have a chiasmus that goes from 40 to 57. |
| 0:55.0 | And on the idea that verse 12 and 13 are finished by verse 1 and 2. And you'll see if you look carefully that the themes that we have in 56 and 57 are a continuation of the themes we have in 55. |
| 1:03.0 | Anyway, it just doesn't work very well for me, but that's all right. |
| 1:07.0 | Let's look at starting of verse 3. |
| 1:10.0 | Neither shall let the son of the stranger. |
| 1:13.0 | So a stranger is a foreigner, right? |
| 1:14.5 | Someone who is not an Israelite that has chosen to live with Israel. |
| 1:18.5 | So this is someone who wants to be part of Israel, right? |
| 1:22.0 | And that's made clear that hath joined himself to the Lord, so has made a covenant. |
| 1:27.4 | Speak saying, the Lord hath utterly separated me |
| 1:30.0 | from his people. So the stranger shouldn't be saying, the Lord has separated me from his people. |
| 1:34.5 | Neither let the eunuch say, behold, I am a dry tree. So a eunuch is an emasculated male. Sometimes that's |
| 1:41.2 | happened through birth defect or natural things. Sometimes it's been through |
| 1:46.6 | accidents and sometimes it's been intentional castration, which can happen for any number of |
| 1:53.1 | reasons in the ancient world. Often someone who was going to be put in a position of trust in |
| 1:58.8 | the royal court was made a eunuch because they |
| 2:01.6 | could be trusted around the royal harem and because they knew that they weren't doing things |
| 2:06.5 | to benefit their children since they couldn't have children. In any case, a eunuch under the law |
| 2:12.4 | of Moses is not fully part of Israelite society. There are things that can't do in the temple. |
