I tip relatively well.

I sometimes help neighbors with luggage when they're struggling on the stairs.

Nice gestures, but let's be honest, they barely

move the moral needle. Meanwhile, the planet heats, pandemics lurk, and inequality yawns.

Am I generous? I'm generous to my kids, to my friends and family, to street musicians.

But these are all common gestures that pay back dividends to me.

Here's the question that haunts me.

Am I, are we coasting on low-stakes virtue while the real work goes undone?
