free. Today I want to talk about empathy. A lot of pastors I know are starting to hear from people

in their congregation saying, I heard somewhere on the internet that empathy is a sin. My response to

one of them recently is that, well, if empathy is a sin, many of the people that I hear saying so don't seem to have been tempted beyond their ability to bear.

I'm not really worried about those who are demonizing empathy because many of them are the same people who are telling us that the

greatest danger to the church was yoga or yoga pants or Harry Potter or hip hop. Plus, this idea

sort of fails what I call the screw tape test. You can't say, I'm with the devil and I'm here to recruit you,

and expect that to really work, except for those who are already committed to the bit.

The really dangerous stuff for the church tends to be a little more subtle. At the same time,

though, I probably shouldn't be that dismissive because we live in crazy times

and we can't count on biblical literacy to get us out of a problem when the discourse is shaped the
