In 1987, the world decided we deserve nice things.

We got Dirty Dancing, which we covered early in the series.

And we also got today's perfect film, Moonstruck.

Moonstruck is pedigreed to the hilt. Pulitzer Prize winner John Patrick Shanley wrote it.

Three-time Academy Award nominee Norman Jewison directed it. And it starred Cher and Nicholas Cage.

It was nominated for six Oscars and won three. Shanley for his script, Cher for her star performance,

and Olympia Dukakis for her supporting role as Cher's mom Rose.

We are talking about it today because it is a favorite rom-com of our producer and today's special guest, Ariana Nettelman.

As we reached the end of our movie series, we thought it only fair to give her the opportunity

to talk about a movie she loves.

Plus, we're both pretty sure that I'm the one who first told her to watch Moonstruck,

so it's a victory lap for me, too.

And to my mind, it is a nearly perfect film.

The movie centers on Loretta, played by Cher.

Cher is a widow and a bookkeeper for her fellow Italian-American Brooklynites and lives with her parents, her grandfather, and his five dogs.

She goes out to dinner with her boyfriend, Johnny Camerary, one night, and he proposes.

Loretta Castorini Clark, on my knees in front of all of these people.

Will you marry me?

She says yes, and then drives him to the airport.

Johnny is off to Sicily to say goodbye to his dying mother.

Before Johnny gets on the plane, he asks Loretta for a favor. I want you to call this number. It's a business number. You ask for Ronnie.

Invite him to the wedding.
